Frequently asked questions
How does the calculator work out the recommended diagonal?
From the SMPTE and THX viewing-angle guidelines. The lower bound corresponds to an angle of roughly 30 degrees (relaxed everyday viewing), the upper to roughly 40 degrees (a cinematic experience). For 16:9 screens that works out to about 24 to 33 inches of diagonal per metre of distance.
What distance should I enter?
From your eyes in the spot where you normally sit to the screen surface. Measure your real viewing position; with a wall-mounted TV remember the screen sits a few centimetres in front of the wall.
Why does the calculator show a range and not a single number?
Because the right size depends on what you watch. The bottom of the range fits if the TV mostly plays in the background; the top if you enjoy films and sport and want a cinema-like experience. Anything in between is always a safe pick.
Does the calculation apply to Full HD TVs too?
The calculation targets 4K content. Full HD needs more distance, roughly 2.5 times the diagonal, otherwise pixels show; the calculator therefore also displays a separate recommendation for Full HD and weaker broadcasts.
Is 65 inches too much at 2 metres?
No. With 4K content you cannot make out pixels even up close and a bigger diagonal only means a more immersive picture. Post-purchase regret usually runs the other way: people wish they had bought bigger.
Is any of my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent or stored anywhere.
