Game console servicing: how to look after your PS5 and Xbox

Game consoles like the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X are small, powerful computers. And just like computers, they get clogged with dust, overheat and wear out over time. There are a few signs you should not ignore if you want your console to serve you quietly for a long time.
Overheating and noise are the first warning
When a console runs louder than before or gets hot and shuts itself down during games, the cause is almost always clogged cooling. Dust in the fan and dried-out thermal paste prevent heat from being carried away. The console overheats and, in the worst case, shuts down to protect itself.
The solution is disassembly, thorough cleaning and repasting of the processor. After the job, the console is usually significantly quieter and cooler, which extends its lifespan.
Common faults we can repair
- Damaged HDMI port - one of the most common faults, where the console stops outputting an image. It can be replaced without replacing the whole console.
- Power problems - the console will not turn on or shuts down suddenly.
- Disc drive and disc reading, worn controllers (stick drift) and other common faults.
- Slow loading and full storage - we can expand the storage (a PS5 via an internal NVMe M.2 drive with a heatsink, an Xbox Series via the official expansion card).
Controller drift and the optical drive
Two faults trouble players most often. Stick drift is when a character or cursor moves on its own even though you are not touching the controller. It is caused by a worn analog sensor under the stick and can be replaced. The optical drive, in turn, gets noisy over time, fails to read discs or keeps pulling them in and out. That too is usually worth repairing before buying a whole new controller or console.
Back up your game data before service
Before any service, back up your saved games. On both PlayStation and Xbox it is enough to turn on automatic backup to the cloud (cloud save storage is part of online membership), or to copy the data to a USB drive. With most repairs you will not lose your data, but when replacing storage or with a drive failure, a backup is your only certainty.
Service, or replace?
With older models, weigh the cost of the repair against the price of a new console. Cleaning, repasting, HDMI port or controller replacement almost always pay off, because they extend the life of an otherwise working machine. Pricier motherboard repairs on a cheap older console may no longer make sense. We will always tell you in advance what is the wiser choice.
How to look after your console
- Place it in an open space, not in an enclosed cabinet, so it has enough air for cooling.
- Keep it away from dusty environments and carpet, which draws in dust.
- Update the system and games regularly.
- Have it cleaned every now and then, just like a computer.
Mind opening it during warranty
Consoles are usually sealed with warranty seals (tamper stickers). If you break them yourself, you may void the warranty. So if the console is still under warranty, handle it through the retailer or manufacturer. With an out-of-warranty console it makes sense to open and clean it, but leave disassembly and repasting to someone experienced. The wrong procedure or too much paste can do more harm than good.
